Asbestos Exposure in Kalamazoo, MI

Kalamazoo occupies approximately 26 square miles in the southwestern corner of Michigan. The city is the county seat of Kalamazoo County and the principle city of the Kalamazoo-Portage metropolitan area, home to nearly 75,000 residents. Kalamazoo is also home to Western Michigan University (WMU), Kalamazoo College (K College), Bronson Methodist Hospital, and Borgess Medical Center.

Kalamazoo has been recognized world-wide for the production of wind engines, buggies, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, musical instruments, fishing reels, stoves, mint oils, cigars, paper products, beer and coffins. Agriculturally, it once was noted for celery and bedding plants. Although much has become suburbanized, the surrounding area still produces farm crops. The Upjohn Company was a notable pharmaceutical manufacturing firm, founded in 1886, in Kalamazoo that is now part of the Pfizer Corporation. Most of Upjohn's original facilities remain, many have been renovated and some new buildings have been constructed. The "Paper City", as it was once nicknamed, was home to several paper mills. The Allied Paper Corporation operated several mills and employed 1,300 people in Kalamazoo during the late 1960s. As the forests of West Michigan were logged out, paper mills eventually closed. Today, significant industries in Kalamazoo are pharmaceuticals, plastics, medical equipment, fabricated metals, industrial robots, aircraft controls, chemicals and bedding plants.

Kalamazoo’s history of industrial and manufacturing activity places the city in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers and others exposed to asbestos containing products are at risk of developing mesothelioma, an asbestos-related lung cancer. If you were exposed to asbestos in Kalamazoo, Michigan and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
