Westfield, Massachusetts

Westfield is a city in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. This city of just over 40,000 residents occupies close to 47 square miles along the Metacomet Ridge, a line of traprock cliffs which runs through Connecticut and Massachusetts. First incorporated in 1669, Westfield has grown from a frontier town to a thriving commercial and industrial center. With easy access to Bradley International Airport and major highways, including the Massachusetts Turnpike, Westfield has developed into a warehousing center for companies such as Home Depot and Lowes. Stanley Park, a 300-acre arboretum and botanical garden established in 1949, offers recreation and cultural events.

The land that makes up Westfield was originally purchased from the Pocumtuc Indians, and until about 1725, it was the westernmost town in Massachusetts. The rich local soil was well suited to agriculture, Westfield's primary pursuit for its first 150 years. In the early 19th century, the town became more industrialized. Local factories produced buggy whips, bricks, cigars, paper, boilers, and many other items. The H.B. Smith Company began manufacturing fences and decorative ironwork in the mid-1850s, then turned to cast-iron boilers, which it produced until 2009. The W. Warren Thread Works, established in 1880, was the first business in Westfield to add electric lighting, and modern office conveniences such as a typewriter and electric clock. While enjoying substantial economic growth in the past, Westfield literally keeps a low profile. Due to a 1952 fire in the six-story Westfield Professional Building, city zoning prevents construction of buildings taller than its fire truck ladders, resulting in few buildings taller than three stories. In the latter half of the 20th century, wage competition caused a decline in manufacturing and population. Though some manufacturing remains, employment has shifted towards the fields of healthcare, education, social services and retail.

Westfield's manufacturing legacy coupled with an active construction industry puts it in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure. We have identified numerous jobsites where asbestos exposure has occurred. If you were exposed to asbestos in Westfield and were diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
