Taunton, Massachusetts

The City of Taunton is located on the Taunton River, approximately 40 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts. Taunton is one of the first American communities to have a woman, Elizabeth Pole, as one of its key founders. The settlement was organized around a town green, known today for its elaborate Christmas lighting displays. Taunton is a typical New England mill town, taking its nickname, "the Silver City," from one of its major industries. Today, Taunton is a blend of old and new. Historic homes and buildings, many predating the Revolutionary War, provide an attractive setting for its nearly 56,000 residents as well as for the electronics and high-tech businesses which form much of the current economic base.

Founded in 1637, and named after a town in England, Taunton originally included the towns of Norton, Easton, Mansfield, Dighton, Raynham, and Berkley. The Taunton River, and its tributaries the Mill and Threemile Rivers, made Taunton an important shipping center for grain, but it did not become truly industrialized until the 19th century. Textiles, felt and bricks were all produced, but the silversmithing and iron industries dominated. The firm of Reed & Barton has produced silver and pewter items, including flatware, Civil War weapons for the Union Army, and Olympic medals, since its founding in 1824. Other well-known silver companies include F.B. Rogers Silver Company, and Poole Silver. Local bog iron provided raw materials for the Weir Stove Company, Mason Machine Works, and the Taunton Locomotive Manufacturing Company which produced some 900 steam locomotives between 1849 and 1899. Although Reed & Barton is still thriving, the economy has become more high-tech and service-oriented. Taunton's industrial parks are home to makers of semiconductors and silicon chips, and a shopping center has replaced the locomotive works.

Taunton's legacy of manufacturing, along with redevelopment and reuse of historic buildings, puts it in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk to develop mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs.
