Asbestos Exposure in Chelsea, MA

Located across the Mystic River from the city of Boston, Chelsea is the smallest city in Massachusetts, with a total area of 2.5 square miles. First settled in 1624 and incorporated as a town in 1739, Chelsea originally included the area known as North Chelsea—all of Revere, Winthrop and parts of Saugus. North Chelsea split off from Chelsea proper in 1846. Chelsea was reincorporated as a city in 1857. Chelsea today is largely residential, with many workers commuting to nearby Boston.

Despite its small size, Chelsea developed a thriving and varied industry during the 19th century. More than half-a-dozen shipyards operated along the waterfront, producing sailing ships for New England's maritime trade. The Chelsea Naval Hospital, designed by Alexander Parris, was commissioned in 1836, followed by a Soldier's Home in 1882. Chelsea's numerous factories produced rubber goods, boots and shoes, stoves and adhesives. A list of Chelsea businesses in 1898 includes Walker Brothers Chemical & Extract Company, Thomas Strahan & Co. wallpaper factory, S.K. Lovell & Co. machine shop & foundry, L.C. Chase & Company Rubber Works, and Atwood & McManus Box Factory. Other and later businesses include American Biltrite, Revere Rubber Company, Panther-Panco Rubber Company, and Gulf Oil Refinery.

Gradually, however, changes in technology and natural disasters took their toll on Chelsea’s industry. Steel-hulled ships replaced wooden ones, and the shipyards dwindled. In 1908, a devastating fire destroyed almost half the city, including much of the city center. The influenza pandemic of 1918 claimed more than 1000 lives in Boston; Chelsea Naval Hospital was instrumental in developing a serum to treat the deadly virus. A second major fire in 1973 destroyed more than 60 businesses and dozens of residences. In September 1991, Chelsea's economy and government had deteriorated to such a degree that it was placed into receivership. Today the city is somewhat recovered, and in 1998 won an All-America City Award.

Chelsea's industrial and shipbuilding past, along with its densely populated neighborhoods, have made asbestos disease a concern over the years. If you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos, you may be at risk to develop an asbestos disease such as mesothelioma.
