Canton, Massachusetts

Canton was originally incorporated in 1630 as part of the Town of Dorchester. In 1726, a section of Dorchester known as "Dorchester South Precinct" broke away to form the Town of Stoughton, which encompassed the parishes of Stoughton, Canton, and Sharon. Sharon and Canton eventually separated from Stoughton, with Canton the last to be incorporated in 1797. Today Canton has a population of around 21,000, under an open town meeting form of government. Located about 15 miles south of Boston at the base of Great Blue Hill, Canton is easily reached by commuter rail, as well as Interstate Routes 93 and 95.

Early industry in Canton includes the Revere Rolling Mill, a copper-rolling mill established by Paul Revere in 1801 which provided copper sheeting used on the hull of the USS Constitution. Revere & Sons Copper Company occupied the site through the early 20th century, when it gave way to Taunton New Bedford Copper Company, and ultimately the Plymouth Rubber Company which operated from 1911-2006. In 1835, the Canton Viaduct was built to provide railroad access and is still in use today. James and Thomas Draper, continuing a family business established in England, opened the Canton Woolen Mills in 1851. The business produced woolen knitted textiles under that name until 1889 when it was incorporated by James' children as Draper Brothers Company. A felted textile operation was sold in 1985, and today the company continues to produce knitted goods in Canton as Draper Knitting Company under the direction of the Draper brothers' descendants. Canton is also home to the Massachusetts Hospital School, found in 1907 by Dr. Edward H. Bradford to provide education to children with physical disabilities. Other notable products of Canton's factories include steam engines and shovels, and fire hose nozzles. Although manufacturing has declined somewhat in Canton, companies such as Reebok, Dunkin' Donuts, and vaccine-maker Acambis have their headquarters here.

Industrial activity in Canton may have exposed workers to asbestos products. Workers exposed to these products may be at risk to develop an asbestos disease. Mesothelioma physicians in and around Canton are listed at the bottom of the page.
