Asbestos Exposure in Wichita, KS

Wichita, with a population of 382,368, is the largest city in Kansas. Located on the Great Plains along the Arkansas River, Wichita has been successively a cattle town, an oil town, and an aviation center. Several local attractions are dedicated to iconic companies which have gotten their start in Wichita, including the Coleman Factory Outlet and Museum, and the original Pizza Hut building, which now sits on the campus of Wichita State University. In 1958, Wichita's Dockum Drug Store was the site of one of the first lunch-counter sit-ins, organized to protest segregation. The city also has a vibrant cultural scene, with art and science museums, galleries, a symphony orchestra, and the 1922 Orpheum Theatre.

Wichita began as a frontier trading post in the 1850s. However, much of the city's economic growth occurred as a result of wartime needs. Railroad access beginning in 1872 made shipping cattle and grain profitable, allowing Wichita to incorporate as a city in 1886. Cargill, Inc., established in 1865 as a grain and lumber trading company, still operates a beef processing plant in Wichita. In 1914, oil was discovered in Wichita. In turn, oil money and the onset of World War I spurred interest in the new science of aviation. In 1917, Clyde Cessna built his first "Cessna Comet”. In 1927, he founded Cessna Aircraft Company. The Swallow Airplane Company produced entrepreneurs Walter Beech, who founded Beech Aircraft Corporation (now Hawker Beechcraft) in 1932, and Lloyd Stearman, whose Stearman Aircraft Company can be linked to present-day Boeing Corporation and Spirit AeroSystems. Lear Jet Corporation (now Bombardier Learjet) was founded in 1962. Airbus SAS also has a facility in Wichita. Although the aviation industry was affected by the events of September 11, 2001, aircraft manufacturing still dominates Wichita's economy, closely followed by healthcare, trade and transportation, and government services.
