Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne is a city in northeastern Indiana and serves as the county seat of Allen County. Established at the confluence of the St. Joseph River, St. Mary’s River, and Maumee River as a trading post for European settlers, Fort Wayne is currently home to nearly 260,000 residents. The city has been an All-America City Award recipient in 1982, 1998, and 2009.

Early on, Fort Wayne’s economy was largely based on manufacturing. In 1885, Sylvanus F. Bowser introduced self-measuring oil tanks for kerosene; by the 1930s, three Fort Wayne factories made 70 percent of the nation's gasoline pumps. Other factories made railroad car wheels, boilers, tanks, medicines, motor trucks, automatic phonographs, meat-packing products, mining machinery, tents and awnings, and beer. With 10,000 employees, General Electric was the city's largest employer during this time. As a major manufacturing center in the midwest by the mid-20th century, Fort Wayne hosted such employers as General Electric, Magnavox, Westinghouse, and International Harvester. Phelps Dodge, Rea Magnet Wire, and Essex Wire, also located in Fort Wayne, comprised the largest concentration of copper wire production globally during World War II. Since the turn of the 21st century, Fort Wayne's economy has been based on manufacturing, education, insurance, health care, and defense and security. Some of Fort Wayne's major employers are Parkview Health Systems, Lutheran Health Network, General Motors, BF Goodrich, and Dana Corp.
