Asbestos Exposure in Rockford, IL

The City of Rockford is the county seat of Winnebago County, Illinois. Situated astride the Rock River, Rockford has a population of about 152,800 residents, making it the third most populous city in the state. Rockford was first settled about 1834 under the name of Midway and was incorporated as Rockford in 1839, becoming a city in 1852. Education and healthcare form a large portion of the city's economy, while Chrysler and Hamilton Sundstrand are among Rockford's top manufacturers, employing nearly 5,000 workers between them.

Rockford developed rapidly in the early 1850s with the establishment of the railroads and the Rockford Water Power Company. Power supplies and transportation attracted industry, and by the end of the 19th century, Rockford was producing a wide range of goods, including furniture, sewing machines, clocks, pianos, pottery and silver-plated goods. The 20th century brought a shift in industries, particularly after World War I, as demand and innovation in heavy machinery, automobiles, aerospace and electronic controls increased. The Sundstrand Machine Tool Company was created in 1926 from the merger of Rockford Tool Company (est. 1905) and Rockford Milling Machine Company (est. 1909) and produced airplane parts. Today, as Hamilton Sundstrand, the company produces a wide range of products used in the aviation and aerospace industries. On a smaller scale, Rockford is also known for its toy industry, represented by companies such as model kit makers Testor Inc. (est. 1929) and toy truck makers Nylint (1937-2001).

Rockford's history of heavy industry and manufacturing puts it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for asbestos cancer.
