Asbestos Exposure in Peoria, IL

The City of Peoria is the county seat of Peoria County, Illinois. With a population of just over 115,000, Peoria is the largest city on the Illinois River. First incorporated in 1835, Peoria has a diverse manufacturing history, with products ranging from pottery, ice and glucose to carriages, cast metal and tractors. Peoria has long been the headquarters of farm equipment and earth-moving machinery company Caterpillar, Inc. Other prominent employers today include the Archer Daniels Midland Company, Komatsu America Corporation and RLI Corporation. Peoria is also home to several colleges and universities, including Bradley University and Midstate College.

Peoria's history of industry begins with its first flour mill, constructed in 1830. Other early industries centered around agriculture, and products needed by the settlers to establish themselves in the new town, such as carriages, metal goods, tableware, and furniture. Alcoholic beverages and farm machinery were key 19th century industries. In the years before the Civil War, Peoria had as many as 22 distilleries, and a number of breweries. Farm machinery began production as early as 1837. The Avery Planter Company was organized in 1883, producing planters, cultivators and other farming tools. As the Avery Manufacturing Company, they soon expanded to steam engines, tractors and farm trucks, purchasing the former Kingman Plow Company plant in 1916. The company went bankrupt in 1923, and after a few attempts to restart the business, closed for good at the start of World War II. Other companies would be more long-lived. In 1910, the Holt Caterpillar Company opened a plant in Peoria to build crawler-type tractors. As Caterpillar, Inc., the company now has 110 facilities in 22 countries. The Keystone Steel & Wire Company began making fences in 1889, and is a major manufacturer of industrial wire and steel products.

Peoria has a lengthy history of manufacturing in industries known for their use of asbestos-containing products. Asbestos-containing materials were widely used during much of the 20th century, putting workers at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
