Asbestos Exposure in Joliet, IL

Situated on the banks of the Des Plaines River, Joliet is one of the fastest growing and most populated cities in Illinois, home to more than 147,400 residents. Located 40 miles southwest of Chicago, Joliet is in Will and Kendall Counties, and serves as the county seat of Will County. Once an industrial city, Joliet has reinvented itself as a tourist destination with a diverse economy. It is also home to Joliet Junior College, the oldest public community college in the nation.

Founded in 1673 as Juliet, the city was incorporated and renamed Joliet in 1852. In 1858, Illinois established a new penitentiary in Joliet, largely due to the area's abundance of stone for prison walls and cells. By 1869 the “City of Stone" had transformed itself to the "City of Steel” concurrent with the construction of the Joliet steel mill, which along with the city's large labor force soon attracted other industries. Similar to many Midwestern cities, Joliet became dependent on manufacturing industries and experienced a period of economic difficulties in the 1970s and 1980s but rebounded in the 1990s. Tourism became a prominent industry, aided by the establishment of riverboat casinos, and the infusion of new tax dollars fueled a revitalization of the downtown city center. The largest employers in the city are Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, Caterpillar, and University of St. Francis.

Joliet’s diverse manufacturing history places it in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure, making the risk of asbestos cancer a concern for workers and loved ones.
