Centralia, Illinois

Centralia is a city of approximately 14,000 people in south central Illinois, incorporated in 1859. Originally established by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1853 as a location for a terminal and repair shops, Centralia was located just south of the junction of the railroad's main line and Chicago branch. Today, Centralia offers a balance of relaxed, small-town living and industry, with three industrial parks, a downtown shopping district, six city parks and two lakes. Centralia is also home to Kaskaskia College, and has been designated a Tree City USA since 1988 for the abundance of ornamental and shade trees which line its streets and yards.

From the very beginning, Centralia was a town shaped by the railroads, both the Illinois Central Railroad Company that built and named it, and later the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The two railroads maintained extensive shops and yards, making them major employers for over a century, and they also shipped the goods produced in Centralia, especially coal and fruit. By the end of the Civil War, coal mining and strawberry farming rivaled the railroads as major industries. Centralia also became a substantial manufacturing center, producing shoes, fruit boxes, bricks, yeast, nails and more. In 1938, Hollywood Brands, Inc., makers of Pay Day candy bars, opened a plant in Centralia, which operated until 1980. In 1947, a massive coal dust explosion in the Centralia #5 coal mine killed 111 miners - nearly half the mine company’s workforce - effectively ending the coal industry in Centralia. Although most of the industries that fueled Centralia's growth in its first century are gone, there continues to be an active manufacturing base, producing Duncan Hines cake mixes, paperboard cartons, band uniforms, fiberglass kitchen and bath products, and water pumps. Centralia is also home to a UPS parcel distribution center.

Centralia was planned as an industrial city, and its long manufacturing history makes asbestos exposure and mesothelioma of ongoing concern.
