Chamblee is a city full of rolling hills located just northeast of Atlanta in DeKalb County. Known for its dairy, railroad and military origins, Chamblee has matured into a progressive urban city since its official incorporation on August 17, 1908. Large companies such as Frito-Lay, Incorporated, Kodak, and General Electric operated plants along Chamblee’s Peachtree Industrial Boulevard for more than thirty years. Chamblee was also home to the original Naval Air Station Atlanta, until it relocated to a neighboring city in 1958.
The Roswell Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad played a key role in Chamblee’s economic growth in early years. Located at the junction of the two railroads, Chamblee served as a hub for textile goods and workers being transported to and from Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1917, Chamblee’s rolling hills were transformed into Camp Gordon, a World War I basic training facility consisting of 1,200 buildings and 40,000 military personnel. Camp Gordon closed after World War I but was later reopened in 1941 as a Navy Flight Training Center. Chamblee experienced great industrial growth in the post World War II era. The opening of several significant plants, including HW Lay and Company and Eastern Kodak Company, provided the city with a strong tax base and a source of employment for many years.
Use of asbestos containing products across various industries in Chamblee was prevalent for many years. Chamblee’s diverse manufacturing background has made asbestos exposure an issue.
