Asbestos Exposure in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, is the state’s most populous city and the country’s ninth largest metropolitan area. Atlanta was originally founded in 1837 when it was chosen as the end stop of the Western and Atlantic railroad line. Ten years later, in 1847, Atlanta was incorporated as a city and quickly became the main transportation hub of the Southeast. At the turn of the century, a product called Coca-Cola was sold for the first time at Candler’s, a local Atlanta drug store. To this day, Coca-Cola Company’s world headquarters can be found in the city, along with The Home Depot, Georgia Power Company, UPS and Delta Airlines. Atlanta is also home to several educational institutions including Georgia State University, George Washington University and Georgia Tech.

The 1920s marked the “Golden Age” for Atlanta, and with it came the first two radio stations and the founding of Sears Roebuck & Company. In 1935, Atlanta’s first airport was built on 300 acres of flat land and became known as DeKalb County Airport. The airport was later commissioned as a US Naval Reserve Aviation Base and, after the U.S. Navy acquired additional land, it matured into a full-fledged Naval Air Station. During World War II growth at Atlanta’s Fort McClellan and Fort Gillem resulted in significant population increase and economic expansion. Atlanta played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, with leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph David Abernathy and students from Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities taking up key roles in the movement’s leadership. Despite limited racial protests, Atlanta became known as “the city too busy to hate”. Atlanta experienced unprecedented growth from the 1970s to 1990s; impressive skyscrapers, convention centers, shopping malls and sports complexes were constructed in the city. In 1996, Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympic Games and offered the world a glimpse into its rich history and modern skyline.
