Asbestos Exposure in Jacksonville, FL

Centered on the banks of the St. Johns River, Jacksonville is the largest city in the state of Florida and the second largest deepwater port on the east coast of the United States. The city is about 25 miles south of the Georgia border and has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Jacksonville was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, but the area later became the site of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in the United States. On February 9, 1832, Jacksonville’s first charter was approved and the area became an incorporated city.

The turn of the 20th century brought much needed expansion to the city of Jacksonville. Builders and architects flocked to the city and many piers, docks, shipyards, and terminals were constructed during this time. Ameristeel, formerly known as Florida Steel Corporation, opened a steel mill in Jacksonville, as did Mid-State Steel & Wire. Throughout the years, Jacksonville’s prime seaport location attracted numerous shipbuilders and dry docks to the Port of Jacksonville: Merrill Stevens Shipyard and Atlantic Dry Dock were two of the larger companies. The United States Navy did not have a base at the Port of Jacksonville until shortly before World War II. Today, Mayport Naval Station, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Blount Island Command (Marines), and Kings Bay Submarine Base form the third largest military presence in the U.S. Additionally, Jacksonville is presently home to prominent organizations such as CSX Transportation, Inc., Seaboard Coastline Railroad, Winn-Dixie, and Petro Chemical Products.

Jacksonville’s longstanding maritime and manufacturing industries place the city in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. If you were exposed to asbestos in Jacksonville and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
