The town of Mansfield was incorporated in 1702 and is located in eastern Tolland County. Mansfield contains the community of Storrs, a census-designated place. With a population of nearly 11,000, Storrs is dominated economically and demographically by the main campus of the University of Connecticut (UConn). The university was founded in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School. In 1893, the name was changed to Storrs Agricultural College and it became Connecticut's land grant college. In 1939, after a few additional name changes, the university received its present day name. UConn is a public research university that serves more than 28,000 students on its six campuses, including nearly 8,000 graduate students.
