Greeley, Colorado

Located in the northernmost part of the state near the Wyoming border, Greeley was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1885. Named after Horace Greeley, the man who originally exhorted the nation to “Go West,” Greeley originally formed as a Utopian community of hearty, educated and spiritual souls who agreed to brave the cold and the whipping Chinook winds to try to carve out a cooperative existence based on collective farming. And they were certainly successful, as the city is the now the 12th-most populated in Colorado, with a population around 100,000.

From the earliest part of the 20th century, sugar beets played an important part in Greeley's economy. The Greeley Sugar Company began life in 1902, and – with other sugar-oriented enterprises like the Great Western Sugar Company and the Kuner-Empson Caning Company joining in - by 1920 Greeley was making a quarter of the entire nation's sugar supply. In a related agricultural niche, the company that started as Monfort – and later became ConAgra and then Swift - emerged in 1960, and subsequently paved the way for Greeley's agri-business growth in the latter half of the 1900's. Greeley-Capitol Pack, Inc. (aka Monfort Packing Company) also appeared on the agricultural business horizon in 1960 and was the largest industrial undertaking in Greeley since the Sugar Company opened its doors in 1902.

To facilitate this new growth, a large number of residential and scholastic facilities were built in the 1960's, including John Evans Junior High School in 1964. The construction of six new schools – including Sherwood (later renamed Scott Elementary School) and Madison Elementary School and Greeley West High School -departed from traditional architecture and featured uniquely - shaped structures of round and hexagonal design. Long a center of education, and education-seeking values, Greeley's State Normal School (whichgrew to become the University of Northern Colorado), began in 1890 and UNC is still one of the premier teacher-education institutions in the nation.

Sadly, many residential and commercial construction projects have put both workers and building inhabitants in jeopardy of asbestos inhalation, and asbestos exposure in the workplace has been a problem in Greeley for many years now. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Greeley, you may be at risk to develop certain asbestos related diseases including mesothelioma (a terminal cancer). For those diagnosed with mesothelioma in Greeley, the area has quality medical care, cancer centers, and doctors that can provide treatment for your condition.
