Wilmington, California

Wilmington is a former city in Los Angeles County, California. Founded in 1858 New San Pedro, Wilmington was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1909, and the area now forms part of the Port of Los Angeles. Although largely industrial, Wilmington also includes residential areas, parks, and two community colleges. As part of the country's busiest container port, Wilmington is home to more than 1,600 businesses, and three major oil refineries, including Valero Corporation and Tesoro Corporation.

Wilmington’s first railroad was constructed in 1869, and its first breakwater in 1873. The Port of Los Angeles was established in 1907. Early businesses in Wilmington included machine shops, and a Chinese Laundry. Wilmington has also been used as a filming location for movies and television since the 1920s. World War II brought an industrial boom, as goods needed for the war effort were produced and shipped from the port. In 1941, Consolidated Steel Corporation built a shipyard which employed 12,000 workers at its height. The yard was closed after the war and converted to other uses. In 1953, Quaker Oats acquired Coast Fisheries, one of many seafood packing plants operating in the area. Other notable companies active in Wilmington include U.S. Borax, Inc., which processes boron from a Rio Tinto mine and operates its own shipping terminal, and ConocoPhillips Los Angeles Refinery, well-known locally for its tradition of painting a storage tank to resemble a jack-o-lantern each Halloween.

Wilmington's lengthy history of heavy industry and construction places it in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be a risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma clinics in and around Wilmington are listed at the bottom of this page. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Wilmington, you should also consider contacting a mesothelioma attorney for legal advice.
