Seal Beach, California

Seal Beach is a coastal city in Orange County, California. Located near Long Beach on San Pedro Bay, Seal Beach has a current population of just over 24,100. Seal Beach's waterfront location makes for a combination of industry and recreation which includes a Navy munitions depot, aerospace manufacturing, and one of the country's first planned retirement communities, Leisure World. Top employers in Seal Beach include Boeing, Siemens Medical Solutions and classic auto parts manufacturer Original Parts Group.

Originally settled as Anaheim Landing in the 1860s, the town later became known as Bay City, but was officially designated Seal Beach at its incorporation in 1915 to avoid confusion with other similarly named cities. The initial vision for Seal Beach was as an ocean-side resort town. An amusement pier was built in 1906, to be replaced by a larger version, complete with rollercoaster, built by the Jewel City Amusement Company in 1916. Hollywood filmmakers used the beach and pier as a movie location. The Seal Beach pier has been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1983, and today is the second longest pier in California. In 1944, the United States Navy established Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach on a 5,256 acre plot of land which also includes a National Wildlife Refuge. The station stores, loads and maintains ammunitions and weapons, which can be transferred to the docks using the base's own railroad line and rolling stock. The Boeing Company's Seal Beach facility originally built equipment for NASA Saturn V rockets and for Skylab. Today, Boeing's Seal Beach location focuses on satellite engineering and aerospace security.

Seal Beach's history of manufacturing and construction, much of it concentrated during a period when asbestos-containing materials were widely used, an ongoing concern for workers and their loved ones. Workers who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma cancer centers in and around Seal Beach are listed at the bottom of this page.
