Santa Clara, California

Santa Clara is a city in Santa Clara County, California. First settled in 1777 as Mission Santa Clara de Asis, the present-day city was founded in 1852 on the site of the former mission. A former agricultural center, Santa Clara today is at the heart of Silicon Valley's electronics and technology industries. Among the city's top employers are computer component manufacturers Intel, Oracle and graphics technology company Nvidia. Santa Clara is also home to Mission College and Santa Clara University.

Incorporated as a city in 1862, Santa Clara's early economic ventures included leather goods, wood products and farming. The Pacific Manufacturing Company produced lumber, mill work, and cabinetry from 1874 until 1960. Santa Clara farms grew flowers and produce for seeds, as well as fruit. The Pratt-Low Preserving Company established a fruit cannery in 1905. The Diana Fruit Preserving Company, founded in 1921, developed a process for coloring and preserving Maraschino cherries. Today, as Diana Fruit Company, their product continues to be a popular dessert topping and fruit cocktail ingredient. Seed grower C.C. Morse & Company, a forerunner of the Ferry-Morse Company, was incorporated in 1884. Morse relocated after the 1906 earthquake, and merged with Ferry in 1930. The new firm became the world's largest seed distributor, and today is part of Norwegian firm Jiffy International. Owens-Corning Fiberglas built a new insulation plant that is still in operation today. After World War II, the development of the Silicon chip transformed industry in Santa Clara, ushering in an array of new electronics and computer companies. Many of these companies, such as National Semiconductor, Applied Materials and Trident Microsystems, are still active.
