San Mateo, California

San Mateo is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in San Mateo County, California. Incorporated in 1864, San Mateo has a population of just over 97,000 in an area of about 16 square miles. San Mateo is a largely residential suburb of San Francisco, with professional, retail and service occupations comprising the majority of economic sectors. Among the city's top employers are the San Mateo County Community College District, San Mateo Medical Center, and Franklin-Templeton Investments.

San Mateo owes its early development to transportation. In 1849, a stagecoach stop was built as part of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route, creating a main road through San Mateo. In the early 1860s, train service was established linking San Mateo to San Francisco. With San Francisco now less than an hour's train ride away, San Mateo became a favored summer residence for the city's wealthy, who built grand estates, most of which no longer exist. Industrialist Eugene De Sabla, Jr., one of the founders of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, constructed a Japanese tea house and tea garden on his lands which is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the large estates were subdivided to accommodate new housing developments after World War II. Hughes Airwest was formed in 1968, and was headquartered in San Mateo until its acquisition by Republic Airlines in 1980. Today, San Mateo is home to a number of high-tech and internet-based companies, including CafePress, video game makers Capcom Company, Ltd. (US headquarters) and Guidewire Software.

San Mateo has a history of construction and development, much of it concentrated during a time period when asbestos-containing materials were widely used, making the risk of asbestos cancer a concern for workers and their loved ones.
