San Fernando, California

San Fernando is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Located in the San Fernando Valley, was incorporated in 1911, and remains an independent city, despite being entirely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. The current population is just over 23,600. San Fernando has a diverse economic base which includes light manufacturing, education, retail and professional services. San Fernando was founded in 1874, making it the oldest city in the San Fernando Valley. Substantial groundwater supplies and a mild climate made San Fernando a prime location for growing citrus fruits, olives and other produce. The Southern Pacific Railroad allowed for transport to the larger markets of Los Angeles. Maclay College of Theology was founded in 1885, and moved to Los Angeles in 1900. After World War II, new highways connected San Fernando and the Valley to Los Angeles and the coast, creating a demand for housing and contributing to the area's suburbanization. Industry also continued to develop. J&M Products began producing wire harnesses and other electrical supplies in 1963. Lab supply maker Samco Scientific was established in 1971, and recently became a subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Medical Illumination International has produced lighting equipment for hospitals and surgical centers since 1978.
