Asbestos Exposure in Richmond, CA

Richmond, a city in western Contra Costa County, is located in the East Bay, which is part of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Home to a population over 103,000, Richmond is a residential inner suburb of San Francisco, as well as the site of heavy industry, which has been shifting towards a service and commercial economy since the 1970s. Chevron USA has a major oil refinery in the city, with a storage capacity of 15 million barrels. In addition to Chevron, the Social Security Administration and Kaiser Permanente's Richmond Medical Center Hospital are among Richmond’s largest employers.

Since its incorporation in 1905, many industries have been located in Richmond, including a dynamite and gunpowder works (Giant Powder Company, now the site of Point Pinole Regional Shoreline), one of the world's largest wineries (Winehaven), automobile manufacturing (Ford Motor Company), and shipbuilding. Richmond Shipyards, operated by Permanente Metals and part of the Kaiser Shipyards, were responsible for constructing more ships during World War II than any other shipyard in the country. The former Richmond Shipyards were transformed starting in the late 1980s into a multiunit residential area, Marina Bay. Starting in the early 2000s, Richmond initiated an aggressive redevelopment effort spurring exurban tract housing, condominiums, townhomes, and terraced hillside subdivisions. The city’s major activity now is as a seaport. Port Richmond, constructed in the 1980s approximately thirty years after the World War II-era Kaiser Shipyards were decommissioned, is a major shipping terminal. In 1993, 26 million tons of goods shipped through Port Richmond, mostly oil and petroleum products. The port continues to be a major entry point for vehicles from Asia.

Richmond’s history of shipbuilding and heavy industry makes asbestos exposure, and the risk of mesothelioma cancer, an ongoing concern for workers. Mesothelioma information, including top doctors and cancer centers in and around Richmond are listed at the bottom of this page. Additionally, you should know that mesothelioma law firms represent people from Richmond who were exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.
