Brisbane, California

Brisbane, incorporated in 1961, is a small city in San Mateo County, California. Brisbane is located on the eastern slope of San Bruno Mountain, alongside San Francisco Bay, and occupies 20.44 square miles, of which 17 are water. Brisbane's population of 3,597 is concentrated in the remaining 3.44 square miles. Top employers include Pepsi Beverages Company, IGN Entertainment, and Hitachi America. Brisbane is nicknamed "The City of Stars" from a local holiday tradition of placing large electric stars on hillside homes and businesses. Many of the stars are now left up year-round, creating an enjoyable night-time display for drivers entering the city.

Like many Bay Area cities, Brisbane was originally part of a Spanish land grant that was eventually turned over for development. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which left some 250,000 people homeless, prompted real estate speculators to look outside the city. In 1907, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a new line just to the east of what would be the town platte for Visitacion City. Developers envisioned a town and extensive railroad facilities, but were hampered by lack of resources until World War I brought renewed construction on the rail yard. In 1929, Arthur Annis, who would become known as the "Daddy of Brisbane," suggested Visitacion City change its name to Brisbane, and sold land at rock-bottom prices during the Depression, resulting in the construction of 400 homes in Brisbane between 1929 and 1933. Although there was little industry apart from the Brisbane Quarry and several slaughterhouses, World War II brought greater prosperity, and Brisbane was able to establish public utilities and many small businesses. Workers from the nearby shipyards helped increase the population. Today, much of Brisbane's economy is focused around its several office parks and an industrial park.
