Belmont, California

Belmont is a city in the San Francisco Bay area of California. Incorporated in 1926, Belmont is located on the San Francisco Peninsula between San Mateo and San Carlos. The population count at the 2000 census was 25,123. In 2009, Belmont was included in Forbes magazine’s list of "America's Top 25 Towns to Live Well." Top employers include the College of Notre Dame, Nikon Precision, and Safeway. Waterdog Lake Park, located in the foothills, is popular with mountain bikers and dog walkers.

Belmont was settled in the late 18th and early 19th century as part of a wave of Spanish colonization in the area. Government and military leaders were given land grants for farming or development. The Belmont area was part of a cattle ranch known as El Rancho de las Pulgas; the name survives as a street name today. The ranch passed from its first owner to Simon Monserrate Mezes, who renamed the area Mezesville, and sold portions of the land to settlers, farmers and others. One of these, Colonel Leonetto Cipriani, built a stylish Italianate villa in Belmont in 1853. In 1862, the Colonel returned to Italy and sold the estate to William C. Ralston. Ralston Hall has been preserved, and is currently home to Notre Dame de Namur University. In the first half of the 20th century, Belmont became a well-known center for "rest cures." The pleasant climate and sedate atmosphere were thought helpful for patients suffering from nervous disorders, and no fewer than five sanitariums operated in the town. The Alexander Sanitarium, which opened in 1925, was known for its modern treatment methods, and such amenities as a swimming pool and tennis courts. It was succeeded in 1973 by the Belmont Hills Psychiatric Hospital. Today Belmont is largely a residential and professional community, with employment in the fields of human services, education and electronics.
