With nearly three decades of medical experience, Dr. John A. Chabot is an expert in the surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer and peritoneal mesothelioma (mesothelioma of the abdomen). He currently leads the Division of Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Surgery at Manhattan’s NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and serves as executive director of its Pancreas Center. Dr. Chabot also teaches surgery at the affiliated Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he holds the title of David V. Habif Professor of Clinical Surgery.
Educational Background
Dr. Chabot received his education from several high-caliber New England universities. He graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University in 1979 with a degree in engineering science, and went on to medical school at Dartmouth College. While attending medical school, he undertook a fellowship in pathology at the Mary Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Chabot received his M.D. in 1983 and embarked on an internship and residency in transplantation at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. During his internship and residency, Dr. Chabot received several accolades, including an Irvington House Institute Fellowship, an Upjohn Young Scientist Award, and two Blakemore Prizes for Surgical Research.
Clinical and Laboratory Research
Upon completion of his residency in 1991, Dr. Chabot signed on as surgical chief of the thyroid clinic at NewYork-Presbyterian and assistant professor of surgery at Columbia University. He has remained at the hospital, in increasingly senior positions, ever since. Throughout the years, Dr. Chabot has remained satisfied and challenged at NewYork-Presbyterian because of the hospital’s “depth of expertise” and its “culture of innovation.” “We are pushing the envelope all over the place,” he said, “and that’s what I like to do.”
Dr. Chabot has researched and published numerous articles and abstracts on the surgical treatment of pancreatic, parathyroid, thyroid and liver disease, as well as peritoneal mesothelioma. He has also been recognized for outstanding patient care, most recently with his hospital’s 2008 Physician of the Year award. He is a member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the New York Surgical Society and the New York Transplantation Society, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
