BW Firebrick

BW Firebrick

All bricks are heavy duty, but fire bricks are designed to be tough and sturdy even under the worst conditions. As the name implies, they are made to hold up during a fire, and they are used in various industrial settings, chimneys and furnaces. To make the bricks as durable as they need to be, a special type of clay is currently used, but for many years the most active ingredient was asbestos.

Asbestos was popular amid most of the 1900's because it is able to resist and even help contain fire. It is also an extremely strong material that served as an excellent base for firebrick, cement and other similar commodities. Products were manufactured using asbestos for many years - even after it was proven to be a health hazard.

The problem with asbestos is that it is toxic. It is made of of microscopic particles, all of which are extremely poisonous. While products containing asbestos are being made, these particles will often be released into the atmosphere, where they can float, become attached to most any type of surface or be inhaled by unsuspecting workers. When this happens, the people who have been exposed to the particles are very likely to get sick. Many of them even die. This is a very serious situation that has affected countless numbers of people. Asbestos is the known cause of respiratory damage, tissue scarring, a disease called asbestosis and a form of cancer known as Mesothelioma.

Circumstances grew even worse after asbestos was proven to be a destructive force to humans. After this revelation was made, every company should have stopped using the deadly material, but many refused. Greedy executives were more concerned about their profit margin than their employees and customers. Many manufacturers continued to use asbestos without even warning people about it. Had they known, workers could have at least protected themselves with masks or other gear, but they were not given the information that could have prevented illnesses and saved lives.

Public outrage grew and more people found out that their health had been put at risk from the products they helped create or purchased. Lawsuits were mounted against companies that made these goods, and many of them declared bankruptcy as a result. Ironically, this actually helped the majority of the manufacturers as they were able to reorganize and continue operating free of debt. They were, however, forced to create trust funds that contained millions and even billions of dollars to pay off people who were affected by their products.
