Dayton, Ohio - An Ohio building which once housed the largest independently owned steel operation, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, will soon fall. The demolition will make way for a new piping plant.
Asbestos has been removed from the interior walls of the administration building, in order to prevent an asbestos disturbance during demolition. Asbestos can be found in many older homes and buildings.
Although the material is now banned from being used, it can still pose a serious health risk to those exposed. Such exposure has been known to cause several diseases, including mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Mesothelioma is an aggressive asbestos cancer which most often affects the abdominal cavity.
Due to a latency period of 10 to 50 years, doctors struggle to diagnose patients in the early stages of their disease. Once diagnosed, however, patients undergo forms of mesothelioma treatment. Such treatment, which often involves chemotherapy and radiation, is palliative. There is no known cure for asbestos cancer.
Once the city acquired the site, they came to an agreement with V&M Star, a company who will use the land to expand its new rolling mill, reports Steel Guru.
Funding for the building's demolition came through a state grant to the city. The grant totaled about $630,000.
The future V&M plant will add 350 full time employees.
