Tampa, Florida - After concerns were raised about airborne asbestos being released during construction work at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, Air Force officials have issues a statement that aims to put minds at ease. Dust was seen blowing away from the site last week, which unnerved many people in the area, as the site features a prominently displayed sign that warned people of ongoing asbestos removal. Inhaling airborne asbestos particles can lead to mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects thousands of people each year.

Mesothelioma can kill some patients within just weeks of being diagnosed. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years following diagnosis.

According to Col. Lawrence Martin Jr., who is the the base commander, people have no reason to fear asbestos exposure. "MacDill is currently tearing down our 1950s-era medical facility," Martin explained. "In the process, the demolition contractor abated all asbestos before demolition began. We take every precaution to ensure the health and safety of both the construction crews and the MacDill populace. As part of our safety requirements, signs have been posted around the demolition site, advising those entering the site to take appropriate safety measures and to keep others at a safe distance.

"Our contractor's earlier abatement efforts had already removed all the asbestos from the site; the dust...is simply dust. The contractor is continuing work to complete the former medical clinic demolition and is ensuring all safety guidelines are followed. The health and safety of those who work live and play on MacDill Air Force Base is our highest priority."
