Atlanta, Georgia - The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), the largest national organization representing asbestos victims, hosts its 7th Annual Asbestos Awareness Conference, Asbestos: Impact on Public Heath, Environment, and the Economy, from April 1-3, 2011, at the Atlanta, Georgia Marriott Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center.

This international conference attracts experts from around the world to discuss occupational and non-occupational exposure issues, detection and treatment advances, environmental and economic impact, national and global policy. Attendees learn about the most advanced medical, occupational and environmental information regarding asbestos exposure prevention, as well as asbestos-related disease prevention and treatment.

Asbestos is a toxic mineral used widely in construction and industry that is known to cause such fatal diseases as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the protective lining of the body’s major cavities and organs.  People are generally exposed to asbestos by inhaling toxic fibers that are released from asbestos-containing materials, such as insulation or pipe lagging.  These fibers lodge in the lungs and cause damage over decades that eventually leads to the development of mesothelioma.  Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs, is the most common type, followed by peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the chest.

The Asbestos Awareness Conference will recognize those who have demonstrated exceptional service to enhance asbestos awareness, and the Unity and Remembrance Brunch will honor and remember loved ones who have passed away from asbestos-related disease.
