Mesothlioma
Mesothlioma is a misspelled version of the word "mesothelioma" Asbestos, long recognized for its durability and excellent insulating properties, is the mineral responsible for the development of mesothelioma cancer. This disease is often referred to as asbestos cancer and attacks the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), heart (pericardial mesothelioma), or abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), resulting in symptoms such as chest pain, fluid-filled lungs, difficulty breathing, and a persistent, dry cough. Sometimes having a long latency period (as long as 50 years), malignant mesothelioma is most often contracted by those individuals who were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis, usually on the job. Those most susceptible include contractors, construction workers, shipyard workers, Navy veterans, plumbers and pipefitters, railroad workers, steel workers, and many others who worked in industries (i.e. aluminum plants, chemical plants, oil refineries) that made widespread use of the mineral. Treatment options are sometimes limited making a mesothelioma diagnosis a life-changing event as deterioration is rapid and there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.
