Mesotheleomaa

Mesotheleomaa is a known misspelling of the word "mesothelioma." An often fatal, albeit rare cancer, mesothelioma cancer continues to be diagnosed in thousands of people each year. Even though the use of asbestos has been banned in the United States since the 70’s, the disease continues to affect many men and women who were actually exposed decades prior. This phenomenon, i.e. the fact that disease onset doesn’t occur for 30 to 50 years after exposure happened is called a latency period. Many service men and women for instance, who served on navy ships and who worked in shipyards during wartime, may just be seeing symptoms developing now. Workers from other types of industry were also affected by asbestos exposure on the job without their knowing. They were not aware of the need for protective gear when working with this hazardous substance and that put their lives at great risk.

Anyone who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma will find that it can affect three primary areas in the body: the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma) or heart (pericardial mesothelioma). The symptoms of mesothelioma can appear, at least early on, to be symptoms of common respiratory illness thereby causing the disease to be misdiagnosed, at times, in the early stages. What happens then is that the disease doesn’t get caught until the later stages like stage 3 or stage 4. At that point, the cancer has spread to other areas of the body and surgical intervention is often not possible. If you know someone who believes they were exposed to asbestos and are now showing signs and symptoms of mesothelioma it would be wise to seek medical attention.
