Mesotheleoma
Mesotheleoma is a common misspelling of the word "mesothelioma." The cause for a myriad of lawsuits during the last 40 years, mesothelioma cancer is a form of cancer caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers.
Victims of mesothelioma disease often are exposed to asbestos while on the job, but this cancer can also develop due to asbestos exposure while performing do-it-yourself home remodeling projects or by inhaling fibers brought home on the clothes of others who work with the mineral. Usually not diagnosed until 20-40 years after exposure (except in extreme cases), the disease remains more common among older individuals, especially those who worked in World War II-era shipyards.
Diagnosed when symptoms begin to develop, this form of cancer usually attacks the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma) but may also attack the linings of the heart (pericardial mesothelioma) and abdomen. Treatment for mesothelioma involves surgery, chemo, or radiation, though researchers have found it difficult to locate drugs that are successful in fighting this cancer.
