Mesothelanoma
Mesothelanoma is a misspelling of the word "mesothelioma." Often referred to as "asbestos cancer", mesothelioma attacks the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), and heart (pericardial mesothelioma).
Mesothelioma causes are limited. In fact exposure to asbestos is the number one cause of mesothelioma. When an individual inhales sharp asbestos fibers they get lodged in the chest area and are unable to be expelled. The imbedded fibers can cause tumors to develop resulting in mesothelioma cancer. In addition, the fibers can cause scarring as well as another type of asbestos related disease called asbestosis.
Someone with a mesothelioma diagnosis can experience breathlessness, chest pain, cough, fatigue, and weight loss. These are symptoms that are often mistaken for other less serious diseases. Individuals who worked with asbestos and are suffering from these types of symptoms should inform their doctor about their exposure in order to prompt more testing. Once diagnosed with mesothelioma, most patients undergo radiation, chemotherapy, and sometimes surgery. Other measures are also taken to insure the patient's comfort.
