Mesotheioma
Mesotheioma is a misspelled version of the word "mesothelioma." Asbestos, once used in more than 5,000 household products worldwide, is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a disease that can have a 20-50 year latency period.
Because of this long latency period, mesothelioma cancer is often not diagnosed until it reaches the later mesothelioma stages, often Stage 3 or Stage 4. Pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma are the most common types of the disease.
Though tests are being developed to aid in earlier diagnosis of mesothelioma, most individuals who currently develop the disease are too sick to respond to treatment once it has been discovered. Symptoms caused by mesothelioma tumors make life difficult for the victim, usually prompting them to leave work. They also find it hard to perform everyday tasks like shopping or cleaning. Most prevalent among older males who worked in industries where asbestos was widely used, mesothelioma has traditionally been difficult to treat, responding poorly to therapies like radiation and chemotherapy.
