Naval Station Everett

Naval Station Everett

Located in Everett, WA, Naval Station Everett is the Navy's most modern shipyard. Established in 1983, it is home to the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is a Nimitz Class aircraft carrier. At the time of the naval yard's creation, Congress decided that the naval fleet which was in a few concentrated areas, should be dispersed into more bases. Everett was chosen from thirteen possible ports. With a $56 million budget, the Navy began construction of the new pier.

In 1993, the Navy broke ground on a support complex, which was fifty-two acres to house a family service center, education offices, a thrift shop, craft shop/gear issue, a chapel/religious education center, and more. In 1994, the site was officially dedicated, witnessed by over 1,000 guests.

In 1994, several ships began to call the port home. Among them were the USS Ingraham, the USS Callaghan, the USS Chandler, the USS David R. Ray, the USS Ford, and the USS Paul F. Foster. In 1999, the port also became home for a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered carrier. Currently, Naval Station Everett houses one aircraft carrier, two Coast Guard cutters, three frigates and two destroyers. The facility is able to accommodate about six thousand troops.

This large base has a massive impact in stimulating the local economy, adding about $350 million a year. As with most shipyards, this naval base offers a huge number of jobs to local workers. The base is about 117 acres. In addition to providing local jobs, it purchases approximately $100 million per year in goods and services from daily life necessities to ship repair needs.

The Naval Station Everett is also home to a unique technology called a breakwater pier. This structure is able to double as a finger pier as well as a breakwater. It helps to prevent larger swells from finding their way into the inner harbor without sending waves into a nearby public shipping waterway. It also has the added benefit of decreasing environmental impact on underwater marine life.

Naval Station Everett was among many shipyards of its era where asbestos was used as a common building and insulating material. The heat resistant and fire retardant properties of asbestos along with mass availability caused companies to use it in the construction of naval vessels. Those who worked at the naval station or aboard ships that were constructed here should be aware that they were likely exposed to asbestos and could develop health complications as a result. Those who were exposed at Naval Station Everett should fill out the form for further details.
