NORSHIPCO

NORSHIPCO

Established in 1915, the Norfolk Ship Repair Company (aka NORSHIPCO) has had an extremely varied history. During World War I, this yard was commissioned by the Navy. It continued to receive maintenance business from the US Government and the yard became globally prestigious. With 107 acres of real estate, NORSHIPCO not only serviced Navy ships but also cruise vessels, cargo ships, tankers and ferries. The yard had a major overhaul in 1998, which prepared it for the twenty-first century.

The yard offers a truly modernized repair facility. With a prime location, it is not surprising that it has seen success. Seated in the Port of Hampton Roads, it offers a thousand foot channel with a forty-five foot depth. It is known as the largest private ship maintenance company on the East Coast. It has offered service to the US Government during most major wars and conflicts since it was founded in 1915. The company has since been expanded to include five sites on the East, West and Gulf coasts. The company has continued to be successful with numerous lucrative contracts.

As a private company, NORSHIPCO is able to service several different sectors. They have overhauled ships for such prestigious customers as Princess Cruise Lines, Carnival Cruises, and Royal Caribbean. With a technologically advanced facility, they rank highly in national surveys as a defense contractor. Unfortunately, a shipyard that services many outside vessels means that the environment can't be controlled for workers.

Those who have been or are currently employed at NORSHIPCO may have been exposed to one particular toxin known as asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous material that was often found in piping insulation and other structural products. Prior to the 1980s, the federal government was unaware of the harmful health risks that exposure to asbestos posed, and no regulations regarding the use of asbestos were put into place until that time. Former shipyard workers should consult with a physician who specializes in thoracic medicine to determine whether or not they are at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, a fatal disease linked to previous asbestos exposure. Those concerned about asbestos exposure and who are seeking further information should fill out this form.
