Colonna's Shipyard
Established in 1875, Colonna's Shipyard resides in Norfolk, Virginia was created by Charles J. Colonna. It has existed as a repair and refurbishing location, taking on small and medium-sized vessels, such as cruise ships, freighters, tugs and barges. It can handle vessels up to nine hundred feet in length and one hundred and fifty feet wide. In another facility on the other side of Virginia's Elizabeth River, they can even accommodate yachts. With its location, the shipyard has the advantage of being convenient to all terminals and ports located in the Port of Hampton Roads. There is easy access to the highway and airport, as well as deep water access to the yard.
This yard was constructed about ten years after the Civil War, and resides on fifty acres with over a mile of waterfront. It also has 80,000 square feet of roofed building and storage area. Colonna's Shipyard decided in 1991 to focus its efforts on overhauling and maintaining mega yachts, beginning with the Virginian, 204-foot boat. Around that time, the shipyard faced financial hardships and entered a nineteen-month Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. It emerged from the situation in 1995 only to go out of business from lack of commissions a few months later.
