Radiologist (definition of)
Radiology is a specialty in which the doctor employs radioactive and non-radioactive materials to diagnose and treat diseases such as mesothelioma. Some of the diagnostic equipment and procedures used by the radiologist include x-rays, magnetic resonance imagery (MRI), computer tomography (CT), infrared thermography and ultrasound. A degree in radiology requires five years of training beyond medical school, consisting of a one-year general residency followed by a four-year residency in diagnostic radiology.
Recent advances in computer technology have made substantial changes to the field of radiology. Molecular imaging is one such new technology that enables doctors to view disease and injury at the cellular and molecular level. Not only does this enable doctors to diagnose disease at much earlier stages, but may allow for the creation of a tailor-made course of treatment based on a patient's genetic predispositions and genetic history.
