Paracentesis (definition of)
Ascites is a condition that results from mesothelioma among other conditions. This is an accumulation of fluid between the viscera, or mesothelium, and the inner lining that covers the internal organs. As this fluid accumulates, the patient may experience any or all of the following symptoms:
- weight gain
- abdominal discomfort or chest pain
- bloat and distension
- breathing difficulties
- swollen ankles
The normal course of treatment is to insert a needle into the body cavity and drain the accumulated fluid. When this involves the abdominal cavity, it is called paracentesis.
The physician first administers an ultrasound scan so as to mark the insertion spot and depth for the needle. The actual procedure is done under local anesthetic as the physician makes a small incision in the abdomen in order to facilitate insertion of the needle. Once the needle is inserted into the abdomen, the fluid is drained into a container through a catheter. The patient's blood pressure is monitored throughout the process in case of a dangerous sudden drop; however, complications from paracentesis are uncommon.
