Massage (definition of)

Massage is defined as a form of physical therapy involving the manual manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, i.e., the muscles, tendons and ligaments. There are several different types of massage, each having its own unique emphasis and set of techniques. Most states require that a professional massage therapist be licensed and certified by the National Certification Board of Massage

About 40 percent of cancer patients, like those with mesothelioma (including pericardial mesothelioma), seek treatment with alternative or complementary therapies. A 2007 study indicates that massage and acupuncture can decrease pain levels and depression in cancer patients; many hospitals and cancer centers now offer massage services.

Also generally safe, massage therapy poses a degree of risk to some cancer patients. There is a slight possibility that the kneading action may cause a tumor to spread. The American Cancer Society advises that cancer patients to avoid massage near tumors and lumps that may be cancerous until an oncologist determines it safe. Patients should consult with their mesothelioma doctor to determine if massage therapy is appropriate for their prognosis.
