Hypnosis (definition of)

Hypnosis is defined as a trance state, during which a subject is in a highly suggestible state. This allows for guided relaxation exercises, intense concentration and focused attention. Hypnotherapy can assist people control physical functions that are normally involuntary, employing subconscious behaviors.

Hypnosis can be used in a number of ways. Visualization is one method regularly used. For example, an asbestosis patient may be asked to imagine what their lungs looks like. If s/he imagines them as being scarred and dry like old paper bags, the therapist may be encouraged the subject to visualize them as healthy.

Clinical hypnosis is also used is to plant ideas in the patient's mind when in this very open and suggestible state. This can be useful for changing behaviors such as smoking and drug addiction. It can also help mesothelioma (peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma) patients in managing chronic pain.

In the U.S., hypnotherapy is not regulated field. Instead, the industry monitors and polices itself through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. These are national organizations for licensed health care professionals who use hypnosis in treating their patients.
