Decortication (definition of)
During a decortication process, the outer surface of an organ is surgically removed. In the case of mesothelioma patients, this means the parietal pleura, in which case the operation is known as a pleurectomy.
This operation is performed when complete removal of a tumor is impossible. Its primary purpose is to eliminate the space in which fluids build up, applying pressure to the lungs, allowing the patient to breath and easing the pain of the disease. It is not a curative process; it is only meant to relieve the worst symptoms.
This surgery is performed under a general anesthesia. Chemotherapy may be administered in advance of the surgery, and the patient is usually required to stay in the hospital for several days afterward for observation and post-operative care.
