Ascites (definition of)
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a less common form of the mesothelioma disease, accounting for less than 30% of all cases. This is the form that attacks the mesothelial lining of the abdomen, and thus affects the gastrointestinal tract.
Common symptoms include abdominal pain and in 40% of cases, abdominal swelling. This condition is known as ascites, and is caused by a buildup of lymphatic fluid. Although this causes a loss of appetite as pressure is exerted on the stomach and a loss of body weight as fat stores are consumed as a result, the patient usually experiences an increase in waist size and abdominal distension due to the swelling. This can be a painful condition; in addition, cancer cells often enter the lymphatic fluid and can be carried to other parts of the body.
The usual treatment involves a procedure called parecentesis, in which a tube is inserted into the abdomen in order to drain the excess fluid.
