Anemia (definition of)
Anemia is the result of insufficient oxygen in the blood. The usual cause is a lack of oxygen-carrying red blood cells due to iron deficiency. However, similar symptoms also result from respiratory diseases that reduce the oxygen capacity of the lungs, including asbestos diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. In addition, cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy can result in the destruction of red blood cells.
The most common symptoms of anemia are general feelings of weakness and fatigue, shortness of breath and pale skin. In cancer patients, the most common and effective treatment for anemia is the use of iron and vitamin B12 supplements.
