Dr. W. Roy Smythe

Educational Background

Born in Temple, Texas, Dr. Smythe began his medical career after earning a Bachelor's degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He then went on to complete a medical degree at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Medicine in College Station, Texas.

Professional Highlights

Dr. Smythe began a surgical internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia followed by a surgery residency from 1990 to 1996. He then completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Thoracic and Molecular Oncology in the Harrison Department of Surgical Research at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Another Fellowship was completed in Clinical Oncology for the American Cancer Society and then he earned the title of Chief Resident in Surgery. Dr. Smythe specialized and completed a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Today, Dr. Smythe is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Scott and White Healthcare and specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, general thoracic surgery and lung cancer. He also is a Professor of Surgery at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. Dr. Smythe's clinical and research interests include advanced lung cancer, mesothelioma, metastic lesions to the lung, esophageal cancer, benign lung disease and chest wall tumors.

Affiliations

Dr. Smythe is an active member in a number of professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, the Southern Surgical Society, and the Society for Clinical Surgery. He is also an active member in the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society for Thoracic Surgery, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Society and the Surgical Biology Club. Finally, Dr. Smythe has also participated in the Thoracic Surgical Biology Club, the American Society for Gene Therapy and the Texas Surgical Society.

Publications

Dr. Smythe has published a number of scholarly articles and abstracts. His abstract, "Antisense Therapy For Malignant Mesothelioma Utilizing Antisense Oligonucleotides Targeting The Bclxl Gene Product" appeared in The American Association of Thoracic Surgery. Another abstract, "Over-expression in Mesothelioma Engenders Cellular Death Via AKT Hypophosphorylation" was published by The Society of Surgical Oncology.

Awards

Over the course of his career Dr. Smythe received a number of awards and honors including the Consumers Research Council, Best Surgeons in America, 2007, Best Doctors In America 2003-2004, 2005-2006, 2007-2008, and the Alley Sheridan Scholar from The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. From the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Dr. Smythe received the Institutional Physician-Scientist Award and from the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine he was named Outstanding Resident in Research and Teaching. Finally he received the Helen Salyer Anderson Award for the Most Outstanding Graduating Medical Student from Texas A&M University College of Medicine and was named the Charles A. Dana Scholar from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
