Dr. Pasi A. Janne

Overview and Educational Background

Associated with the world-renowned Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Pasi A. Janne, MD, PhD, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania - School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Upon earning his medical degree from this prestigious institution, Janne completed a residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and earned a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Dana Farber. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and works in the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Professional Highlights

Dr. Janne is board certified in internal medicine (1999) and medical oncology (2001). His major areas of clinical interest include various types of thoracic cancer, including malignant mesothelioma. He lists his main research interest as "the study of epidermal growth factor receptor mutations in non-small cell lung cancer and their impact on the efficacy of EGFR-targeted therapeutic agents" and Janne has penned numerous studies on this topic. He also shows a keen interest in developing new methods to test for changes in lung cancers and pre-cancerous lung lesions. Successful studies in this area will lead to the development of specific treatments designed for each patient based on the genetic make-up of their tumors. It may also help identify pre-cancerous patients who are likely candidates for developing lung carcinomas, therefore allowing them to be treated before cancer develops.

Clinical Research

In the field of malignant mesothelioma (including peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma), Janne has worked to identify molecular therapeutic targets in hopes of developing new and novel treatments for this aggressive disease. Currently, these agents are being tested by Janne and his colleagues in a variety of in vitro model systems.

Publications and Awards

Dr. Janne has contributed to a number of peer-review journals as an author and co-author. Some of those publications include The New England Journal of Medicine, Oncology, The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Science, and Cancer Research. Janne was honored in 2001 as a recipient of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Merit Award.
