Dr. Michael Kashgarian

Educational Background

Dr. Michael Kashgarian began his 50 year medical career at Yale University's School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. After receiving his medical degree in 1958 he moved to Barnes Hospital of Washington University in St. Louis to complete his internship and residency in Internal Medicine. He then began his focus in Pathology with a residency at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center in Connecticut. He is board certified in Anatomic, Clinical and Medicolegal Pathology.

Dr. Kashgarian travel abroad to the University of Goettingen in Germany to complete his Post Doctoral studies in Renal Physiology. After completing his post doctorate, he returned to the Yale-New Haven Hospital for a Fellowship in Laboratory Medicine.

Professional Highlights

Currently, Dr. Kashgarian is Professor Emeritus of Pathology (tissue and organ diseases) and Senior Research Scientist at Yale University Cancer Center. His clinical research focuses on a number of areas including renal pathology, diagnostic electron microscopy, and genetic pathology. Other interests include advanced imaging techniques, confocal microscopy, image analysis, as well as vital microscopy. With his expertise in cellular behaviors and treatment of thoracic disease Dr. Kashgarian is vital in helping to develop advanced treatments for those suffering from malignant mesothelioma.

Affiliations

Dr. Kashgarian belongs to a number of professional organizations including, the American Heart Association: Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease, American Physiological Society, American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the College of American Pathologists. He is also an active member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, International Society of Nephrology, Renal Pathology Society, American Society of Nephrology, American Medical Association and Education in Pathology.

Publications

Dr. Kashgarian has authored and co-authored a number of scholarly publications including, "Induction, differentiation, and remodeling of blood vessels after transplantation of Bcl-2-transduced endothelial cells," in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. He also co-authored, "Antibody-Mediated Rejection Criteria - an Addition to the Banff '97 Classification of Renal Allograft Rejection," published in the American Journal of Transplantation.

Awards

Last year Dr. Kashgarian was honored by the Renal Pathology Society. He is a respected speaker and presenter especially in the areas of clinical nephrology. He presents the "Renal Grand Rounds" weekly which is attended by trainees and faculty in pediatric and adult nephrology. The forum discusses management and diagnostic issues as well as reviewing the literature on current and controversial issues.
