Dr. Jack A. Elias

Overview

Dr. Jack A. Elias currently holds the position of Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine as well as the Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Medicine Chief, Beeson Medical Service at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The Department of Internal Medicine at Yale brings together a number of clinicians, investigators and educators from around the globe. With 351 full-time faculty members and 600 volunteer faculty members the staff includes 430 residents and a number of members of the Association of American Physician as well as the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Educational Background

Dr. Elias began his medical career by attending the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete his residency at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts as well as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Elias's fellowships in Allergy and Immunology as well as Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine were completed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Clinical and Laboratory Research

Dr. Elias's clinical interests include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease and acute lung injury. He also has a number of research interests including cellular and molecular pathogenesis of asthma and COPD as well as cellular and molecular mechanisms of lung injury repair and remodeling. He has also studied transgenic modeling of pulmonary diseases and disorders, effector mechanisms of IL-13, VEGF, and TGF-beta type cytokines in the lung, and effector mechanisms for the TH2 and Th1 cytokines in the lung.

Publications and Awards

Dr. Elias has authored and co-authored a number of scholarly articles, including "Pulmonary expression of leukemia inhibitory factor induces B cell hyperplasia and confers protection in hyperoxia," which was featured in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. He also co-authored, "Adenosine is an important mediator of IL-13 induced inflammation in the lung: Evidence for anIL-13-adenosine amplification pathway," in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and "Science in Medicine Series, New Insights into the pathogenesis of asthma," also printed in the same publication in 2003. He also published the Fishman's Manual of Pulmonary Diseases and Disorders.

Dr. Elias has received a number of awards over the course of his medical career including the Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishment from the American Thoracic Society as well as four RO1 awards and a T32 training grant in Pulmonary Biology. As a respected expert on lung inflammation, injury and repair, Dr. Elias was the first to translate pathogenic mechanisms in models to humans and human disorders.
