Overview

A top cancer researcher who has shown a keen interest in developing and investigating new treatments for malignant mesothelioma, Hedy Lee Kindler, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center in the department of hematology/oncology. In practice since 1989, Kindler also serves as director of the hospital's mesothelioma program and also medical director of gastrointestinal oncology at the facility.

Educational Background

Dr. Kindler's education includes a bachelor's degree in biology from Yale University and a medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Upon graduation in 1989, she moved to Southern California where she completed both an internship and residency at UCLA Medical Center. Following her time at Sloan-Kettering, she spent three years at Buffalo's Roswell Park Cancer Institute and then assumed her position in Chicago.

Research and Affiliations

As a researcher, Kindler largely focuses on the research of novel drugs for the treatment of mesothelioma, a difficult-to-treat cancer for which the only known cause is exposure to asbestos. Her interest in the disease peaked when her father died of mesothelioma in 2001. Her work has garnered much attention in a number of cancer-related professional journals, including the Annals of Oncology, the Journals of Thoracic Oncology, and several others. She has also traveled extensively throughout the United States, lecturing on her research studies at scientific conferences and workshops around the country. Some of her mesothelioma research has also gained international intention.

Kindler is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group and serves on the Science Advisory Board of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. In addition, she is a member of International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. A reviewer for a number of oncology-related journals, Kindler also serves on the Editorial Boards of the journals Clinical Advances in Hematology & Oncology and Targeted Therapies, and has spent the last several years as associate editor of the journal Lung Cancer.
