Dr. Graeme L. Hammond

Educational Background

Dr. Graeme L. Hammond began his medical career after earning his bachelor of science from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He then went on to attend medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Hammond's surgical internship was fulfilled at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. His residency and fellowship were both completed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Hammond is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Hammond is now retired.

Professional Highlights

In 1969 Dr. Hammond entered the academic field to become an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. Three years later he was promoted to Associate Professor and finally full professor in 1979. Occasionally, Dr. Hammond would serve as a visiting research scientist for a year in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. He also completed another visiting research scientist position in the Section of Immunobiology at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hammond's hospital and university appointments included serving as an attending surgeon at both the Yale-New Haven Hospital and the West Haven VA Medical Center. He was also a member of the Yale Cancer Center. Dr. Hammond's surgical specialty was cardiothoracic surgery and his clinical interest was in thoracic surgery.

Aside from his work at Yale, Dr. Hammond worked as a visiting professor at a number of institutions around the world. In the United States he taught at Brown University, North Carolina State University, University of Cincinnati and Baylor College of Medicine. Globally, Dr. Hammond has taught in Istanbul, the Chinese Academy of Science and the Russian Medical Military Academy.

Publications

Dr. Hammond had written a number of scholarly publications including, "Current Assessment and Management of Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum: Experience in 24 Adult Patients which appeared in the European Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery. He also published "Inhibition of Alloresponse by a Human Trophoblast Non-Coding RNA Suppressing CIITA Promoter III and MHC Class II Expression in Murine B-Lymphocytes in the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplant.

Awards and Affiliations

Dr. Hammond has received a number of honors over the course of his career including being named the Established Investigator for the American Heart Association. Professionally he belongs to numerous organizations and associations including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, and served as a Fellow on the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery for the American Heart Association. He is also a member of the American Surgical Association, the Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons among others.
